Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society was formed to promote and encourage the production, distribution, and exhibition of independent film in British Columbia. Functioning as a production co-operative, Cineworks provides its members with the production equipment and facilities, information related support structures and environment necessary for independent filmmaking.
Cineworks provides its members with production and post-production equipment, facilities and information in a supportive environment. Cineworks also offers member services and programming initiatives in the form of networking opportunities, hands-on workshops and seminars with visiting filmmakers, an active website, a monthly newsletter and the programming of independent Canadian films. Cineworks arranges and presents public exhibitions and discussions aimed at increasing film awareness and knowledge and encouraging a growth of film analysis.
The society has an active membership of over 250 filmmakers who are involved in a variety of aspects of independent filmmaking on an ongoing basis. Cineworks was incorporated as a non-profit society in 1980, and in 1983 was recognized as a charitable organization by Revenue Canada.
