Bjornerud uses the shadow of her subjects to introduce a lot of heady themes in these paintings.  The dual nature of the self, the limitations of free will, the unknowable in the natural world; these are all ideas that present themselves in the narratives that are delicately laid out on the paper.  The disturbances and violence in the narratives is made acceptable and significant by the beauty of the paintings themselves, and the tenderness with which they were made.

Kristin Bjornerud holds an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan (2005) and has been exhibiting nationally since 2003.  Her work can be found in the collections of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and Citibank Canada.
