Photographer Hana Pesut has begun a series of dual portrait photographs of couples titled "SWITCHEROO". The couples are photographed twice, once in their own outfits and again wearing each others outfits against the same background. The intriguing nature of the side by side dual images is the recognition of the variances between the normal and affected versions of the couples. Whether quick or slow to establish what has been switched, the act of observing allows the viewer to question many different aspects of gender, sexuality, and/or fashion sense.
Vancouver artist Michael Markowsky was recently named one of Canada's official new 'War Artists' by the Department of Defense in Ottawa. By invitation of the Canadian Forces Artist Program, Michael Markowsky was stationed for two weeks at CFS Alert, Nunavut, the most isolated and northern permanent human settlement. Departing from CFB Trenton in a CC-177 Globemaster, Markowsky travelled the eight hour flight to CFS Alert to document the experience of Canada's arctic operations.
Markowsky painted 'en plein air' in minus 25 degree Celsius. The small oil on panel paintings are quickly rendered, attempting to capture this isolated part of Canada's north. With almost 24 hours of daylight, Markowsky explored the North Pole, its icebergs, its haunting vastness with the occasional company of an arctic wolf, arctic hares and a sighting of a polar bear.
He follows in the footsteps of a legendary list of Canadian artists who have also participated in the program in the past, including Group of Seven painters: A.Y Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley and Lawren Harris, as well as David Milne and Alexander Colville. We are delighted to present geometric scuptures made from found material by Emily Carr graduate, Aaron Moran. The sculptures are made from recycled wood, specifically houses that have been demolished to make room for new developments. The lime green, electric yellow colours of the salvaged wood seem to reflect the era in which they were built. They are quirky, yet reveal a sophisticated symmetry and balance. Moran titled a number of the works after the street address of the house from which he salvaged the wood.
