The Golden Age of Danish painting in the early 19th century brought renewed vitality, nationalistic pride and excitement to Danish art. The Masters of this period inspired a new generation of Danish artists to embrace their landscape showing the northern light that is both soft but allows for strong contrasts of colour and shadow. The young artists that followed in the second half of the 19th century embraced the traditional teachings of the Danish Academy and rebelled against these teachings by also studying in Paris, introducing elements of Impressionism to Danish Realist painting.

Works of this period, especially those of Peder Monsted, often regarded as the best artist of this period, seem to glow with an ambient light. His technique is precise and controlled but the details are often simply suggested by movement, colour and tonal variation.

This exhibition explores Danish paintings from the second half of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century including works by Peder Monsted, Carl Frederic Aagaard, Viggo Pedersen, Godfred Christensen, Frederik Winther, Fredrik Rohde, Mogens Vantore, and others.
