Richard Henriquez is an internationally known architect and artist who lives in Vancouver. Born in Jamaica, he was educated at the University of Manitoba and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where, in 1967 he received a Masters degree in Architecture and Urban Design. An influential mentor at MIT was the Hungarian artist and photographer Georgy Kepes, with whom he studied Advanced Visual Design.
He is the Founding Partner of Henriquez Partners Architects, a firm that is recognized internationally for it’s design excellence.
Beyond the multiple practical dimensions to his architectural work Henriquez has, for decades, carried on a parallel artistic practice. Produced as an end in itself as well as architectural research, this work is informed by history both real and invented, the surreal, anomalies of scale, the bible, and the expression of human ritual.
One of his most ambitious pieces, entitled Richard Henriquez: Memory Theatre was exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Venice Bianalle. This exhibition explored one of the central issues in Henriquez's work, an architecture inspired by memory and history.
Henriquez has been awarded numerous awards including the Gold Medal of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the highest honour that can be bestowed an architect in Canada. In 2009, the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, was conferred on Henriquez by Simon Fraser University. He has lectured and been published widely in North and South America and in Europe, and his work is held in private collections as well as the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the latter holding over 7,000 pieces.
