Gallery Jones is pleased to present Trace Heavens, an exhibition of new work by Vancouver-based artist James Nizam. The works in this exhibition mark some of the parallels the artist sees between light, the photographic apparatus, architecture, and perception. Through architectural interventions and studio-based explorations that channel and record light, Nizam is able to create visual effects that verge upon the palpable. In the work "Shard of Light", and the Thought Forms series, Nizam harnesses the procession of the sun with jury-rigged setups that capture and manipulate sunlight into sculptural form. The resulting light sculptures establish a correspondence between the structure of the room and the internal construction of a camera while also making reference to solar phenomena seen and studied in ancient astrological observatories. The exploratory process undertaken in creating the works in this exhibition speaks to the artist's continued interest in using the medium and mechanics of photography to challenge modes of perception directly related to photography and light.
